16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence has officially begun in Antigua and Barbuda. Under the theme “Unite to End Gender-Based Violence”, this year’s initiative emphasizes collaboration and community action to eradicate violence against women and girls.
The campaign is led by the Directorate of Gender Affairs, part of the Ministry of Social Transformation. The initiative receives support from various stakeholders, including the Support and Referral Centre (SARC), which provides resources and assistance for survivors of gender-based violence, and from the UN Women Multi-Country Office – (MCO) Caribbean.
Alarming statistics reveal that the island nation faces some of the highest rates of sexual violence in the Caribbean, with rape and sexual abuse remaining urgent crises.
This campaign is part of a global movement that starts on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, Human Rights Day. In Antigua and Barbuda, it has become a rallying point for activists, community leaders, and citizens, all working together to create safer environments and promote equality. By addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, the campaign seeks to build a society where everyone feels protected and valued.
